Little Panic Dispatches from an Anxious Life Amanda Stern 9781538711927 Books Reviews

It is impossible not to identify with the emotional trauma Amanda Stern depicted in such vivid detail. This book is important and essential to understanding the ways otherwise bright, talented, charismatic young people can be mis-labeled as deficient, difficult, or disabled - characterizations that show the limits of the “specialists” rather than the children, yet the children live with the stigma and insecurity this instills. The specialists missed Amanda’s obvious bravery and brilliance, failing to reassure her that these qualities will carry her far in life, long after she leaves behind the institutions that try their best to measure and quantify everyone by the same, unimaginative standards that often produce overly fawned over clones. It is to Amanda’s credit that she carved out a completely original and highly successful life of her own design despite the best efforts of the system the purpose of which is to enforce conformity from unique individuals whose personal gifts are discouraged instead of developed. Good for you Amanda, showing them you were stronger than their collective efforts to confine you within narrow definition!
Stern is a brilliant writer who infuses her incredible sense of humor into subject matter that can be difficult. Her experience is personal while also being deeply relatable. The world is a better place because of Little Panic!
I was so riveted reading Amanda Stern's memoir that I read it huddled in my sleeping bag while backcountry camping in Yellowstone. Stern is a masterful writer and story-teller, and the book is so interestingly crafted, moving back and forth seamlessly between her childhood and teen years to her adulthood and the present. It's hard not to ache for the child whose "problem" is misdiagnosed for two decades, and whose actual fears and frustrations are always out of sight of those eager to help her. And yet, one wonders whether the intensely creative, powerful woman who emerges, might not have found such a voice had she been helped more readily as a child and teen. Perhaps that's just my desire to put a silver lining on such a challenging youth, but Ms. Stern is such a powerhouse, and her memoir is so compelling that I can't help but wonder wheter her own process of coping over all those years shaped the amazing woman she clearly is.
Beautifully written, rich, layered memoir with so much to offer. Informative and entertaining and impossible to put down, Not only does it offer an inside out view of anxiety, the author, by honestly and openly sharing her experiences, also gives the reader a roadmap of childhood. It's a coming of age story that should be read by anyone who wants a better sense of what it means to be a young person in the world.. The author also brilliantly captures life in NYC in the 70s/80s.
This book was an amazing eye witness account of what a panic disorder looks like from the inside out. The author kept the personal point of view the entire book but from different angles depending on her stage of life and level of maturity or comprehension. It was funny, sad, happy, and scary all wrapped into a complicated of a misdiagnosed disorder. So much is written about mental health, teenagers and the world these days. This book is a wonderful window into how some of them cope, self-medicate and truly feel. What a funny and quirky book with true heart.
An artfully rendered account of how anxiety can damage the life of a child, who without any understanding of psychology can only blame herself for her perceived failings. Stern narrates childhood with authenticity and great beauty.
This is a beautiful book, the kind I wish would never end. It is category-defying, page-turning, important, brave. A memoir that reads like a cozy, gripping novel, brimming with descriptions, images, and anecdotes that are at once courageously intimate and achingly relatable. This is a book for everyone who has carried some of the same fears and questions from childhood into adulthood. But for those, like me, who do struggle with anxiety, LITTLE PANIC is a light in the desert; each chapter a magic mirror that provides a dose of therapy I didn't know I needed. I'm so grateful to Amanda Stern for writing this book, for living this life.
Stern expertly renders a child's mind gripped by anxiety's gnarled claws. This memoir is beautifully written and impossible to put down. If you've never experienced anxiety firsthand, by the end of the book you'll have more empathy for others dealing with it; and if you have suffered from it, Stern's experiences will resonate profoundly.
