The DeathSpeaker Codex Books 1 3 DeathSpeaker Series Box Set eBook Sonya Bateman Reviews
Loved the action, magic and family aspects all rolled into one! Gideon's discovery of his true family and heritage as well as fighting for all of the others is an amazing read! Can't wait to continue this series!
This series has a whole lot of really graphic violence. That said, it has good amount of humor to it, too. Some times dark, but not always. It's got excellent pacing, and the narrative flows well. I think the author is a very good writer, and I really enjoy his work.
That said, I have two critiques I'm hoping the author works on. One is that he added bizarre "voodoo" characters that obviously involved no research into the religion at all, especially compared to the much more traditional depiction and naming of seelie and unseelie fey. They seem based on 1950's ideas about zombies pared with modern stereotypes of African Americans.
The second is a sort of general critique. Or maybe just an observation. At every step, the main characters never even try any solution besides slaughter. I mean, if actual people of color reacted in the same manner to organizations that systematically slaughtered and oppressed them, there'd be nothing but a daily blood bath. Instead, society says that activists looking to protect themselves and their children should find a better, entirely non-violent way. But if this author couldn't find a better way than killing all the bigots given a world bound only by his imagination, how in the world are real people supposed to come up with a way? Conversely, if real people with real threats against them and everyone they care about do find better answers, even without magic powers, shouldn't these heroes be held to the same standard as ordinary African American and Latino children?
I guess I just miss the times when fantasy literature was more its own thing and less like a TV show. I mean, this is really enjoyable, I just wish the plots had a little more complexity and uniqueness than power up good guys, beat down bad guys. That said, I'm not sure I'm able to come up with any solutions more creative or positive than the author has. I just kind of think we might need to as a people
Oh, and there is a third issue. In some ways it's minor, but the beginning of the action hinges on it. For no apparent reason, once a Milus Dei ghost knows our protagonist is the DeathSpeaker, so do the _living_ Milus Dei members. And it's absolutely never established how they know what he is. I mean, it's absolutely immediate. He uses his powers without any witnesses (if there could be any to an internal conversation), gets away from their members, and instead of just being like, "Hey, you thwarted our plans," they're after him as the DeathSpeaker. Frankly, it's the kind of fast-paced, lots of action story that makes holes like that not very relevant to me (ones that are clumsy, but wouldn't affect the meaning or the arc of the story if they had been done more elegantly), but it bugged me as out of place.
I also just mostly liked the characters. After reading a several not very good writers in Unlimited, I'm really struck by how well Bateman creates so many different individuals. A whole lot of writers can't write more than one voice very well at all, let alone a dozen or more. I kind of wish the characters were a little less CW network in terms of angst and extremes, but they're still more swashbuckling adventurers than emo. They're engaging and interesting. Even the characters we meet in passing are interesting and individual. I can't say how very many writers just can't go further than boy band character diversity.
I've only read these three so far, but I intend to read further. I took a star off because the flaws I mentioned make it a like not love for me, but I think most of the people who'd like a series like this wouldn't mind. I definitely recommend it to fans of shows like Supernatural, Grimm, and other dark but fun and funny urban fantasy.
